The impact of Covid-19 on the travel industry has been the most terrible in its history during peacetimes and has affected all businesses and people involved globally.
Now, by September 2022, is it safe to visit Peru or South America in general?. The answer is YES! and we tell you more here.
It all started on March 2020…
Tourism in Peru looked solid and growing. Since January that year, we began to get a greater number of last minute visitors as the growing Covid-19 virus was spreading through Asia and visitors preferred to be away from the area. Nobody would ever imagined that once it reached Europe in the way it reached Italy and Spain, the impact would be so high worldwide that it would put almost every country in the world in a state of health emergency.
For mid-March, Peru only presented one case. We all trusted that the quarantine would last only 15 days and we would resume our activities because the virus did not represent any risk for us, we were so far from Asia, even Europe but we agreed to applaud the security measures
THEN COVID-19 TURNED INTO A NIGHTMARE
In the early days of the state of emergency, the news began to get more and more negative. Each day, the infections increased and each week the quarantine extended lasting until June 2020 when we finally got less restrictions.
In addition, the global news was discouraging.
As a result of the global situation, all trips scheduled through July 2020 were canceled. Although Japan insisted on holding the Olympics, we wondered how our representatives could travel?. National and international flights were suspended and would not return until July or August of that year. Peru experienced the worst of situations in Latin America. Covid-19 virus claimed many lives and left a lot of pain and fear. There was some light between November and December 2020 and it resurfaced until May 2021. Our image internationally was the worst over all this time.
IS PERU SAFE NOW? YES!…and Machu Picchu is 100% operative!
- Since May 2021, the train to Machu Picchu resumed most of the regular schedules and we began to see some international travelers visiting Cusco and Machu Picchu.
Very little privileged ones were able to visit Machu Picchu feeling alone in the place. Something that we would not like to happen again.
While Covid-19 finally gave a truce for our country; Vaccination was progressing faster than we thought and the cases of infected and dead people fell more and more every day.
As of September 2022, we still have some sanitary security measures such as:
- It’s mandatory to wear a double mask in all public places and it’s optional in open areas like streets or parks or at Machu Picchu itself.
- In order to enter Peru, it’s mandatory to all travelers over 18 years old to have 3 vaccines against Covid-19. This is also requested when boarding a domestic flight and on board the train to Machu Picchu.
We are welcoming visitors from every part of the world without restrictions.
In general, unless for the fact of wearing a mask, it’s possible to visit all destinations in Peru in a quite normal way. All hotels and restaurants are operative. All atractions, museums, archeological sites are open. The events hare back!
With great joy we see that every day more visitors arrive to Peru and also, Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands and other destinations in the region.
